Bridging Sectors for Safety: QECH, Labour, and Optichem Lead Blantyre’s OSH Awareness Drive.

Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Optichem fertilizer, recently commemorated World Day for Occupational Safety and Health with a impactful event in the city.
The day began with a significant public awareness walk. Participants, including representatives from QECH’s Occupational Safety and Health team, the Ministry of Labour, Malawi Union for Informal Sector (MUFIS), Optichem and OSH students from Malawi University of Business and Applied Science (MUBAS) among others, marched from the hospital premises to the ShopRite Chichiri Roundabout and back.

This visible demonstration aimed to highlight the importance of safe and healthy work environments for all.
Upon returning to the hospital, attendees gathered for speeches emphasizing the critical role of occupational safety and health in preventing workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.
Representatives from the organizing bodies underscored their commitment to fostering a culture of safety within their respective institutions and across industries.

The commemoration concluded with a tour of the ODP1 at QECH. This provided an opportunity to showcase the hospital’s facilities and potentially highlight specific safety measures implemented within a healthcare setting.
This joint effort by QECH, the Ministry of Labour, and Optichem fertilizer underscores the multi-sectoral approach needed to promote and ensure occupational safety and health in Blantyre and beyond.
The public walk and subsequent discussions served as a vital reminder of the collective responsibility in creating safer and healthier workplaces for everyone.
