Malawi Union Informal Sector (MUFIS) in collaboration with the Coalition of Women Living with HIV and AIDS (COWLHA) and vendors have today conducted a clean-up exercise at Liwonde market in Machinga district.
Liwonde main market chairperson Abdul M’bisa said the initiative aims to create a cleaner environment for the approximately 9,000 vendors who spend most of their time at the market.
M’bisa emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean surrounding to prevent challenges that come with poor sanitation.
COWLHA Coordinator in the district Sakina M’dala stressed the need for women to take an active role in promoting sanitation.
District Environmental Officer Andrew Kitano Hamuza commended the vendors, MUFIS and COWLHA for the initiative, saying it will significantly contribute to improved sanitation at the market.
He revealed that a staggering 14,000 metric tons of waste are collected daily at the market hence the need for sustained efforts to maintain a clean environment.
