On 8th March each year, the world commemorates International Women’s Day(IWD). This is the day which people around the world gather in different places in honor of all women and their presence.
Zione Nyirenda, the Project Coordinator for Hotel Food Processing and Catering Workers Union (HFPCWU) described International Women’s Day as the day which was established after seeing that women in the world are being discriminated in different activities.
“This day was set so that we, as women should have time to come together and discuss things which are stressful to us. As women we need to use this opportunity to review the gaps between men and women in our daily lives”, said Nyirenda.
She continued by encouraging women to always love each other and whenever there are opportunities, they should include their fellow women as well as inspire others if they are in different positions.
However, Shakespeare Sesani, General Secretary for HFPCWU shared IWD message by saying that women are very important since they contribute more than half of the population so leaving them behind it’s a loss.
“Women should be encouraged to participate in all activities and am calling upon all women to demand their rights for equality. This is the time we want people to be treated equally”, said Sesani.
Agreeing with Sesani, Mwanda Chiwambala, Executive General Secretary for Malawi Union for Informal Sector (MUFIS) said that this is the time we should invest more in women especially those in the informal economy to end up their challenges economically.
“For the country to be developed, we need to engage women and am urging the government to help women in terms of giving them loans so that they can stand up for themselves and change their lives”, Said Chiwambala.
This year’s IWD theme for HFPCWU is ” Let’s All Commit To Demand for Equality At Work Through Effective Implementation and Protection of Women’s Rights “.
